Michael Davitt was a member of the IRB and was one of the founder members of the Land League. The Land League successfully campaigned for a number of land acts that enabled Irish tenant farmers to buy the land that they farmed.Enacted by Gladstone, the acts provided low interest loans and incentives for landlords - it was known in Britain as 'killing Home Rule with kindness". A fuller history of Davitt is available here. There is a small museum, which is beside the friary.
