Strade, Co. Mayo

Strade is known for two reasons; Michael Davitt and the Friary. Davitt is buried in the graveyard ajoining the friary and his statue is located just in front of the friary (there is a small museum there too). "One of the Mac Jordans sept founded a monastery here in the first half of the 13th century for the Franciscans. But Jordan of Exeter, Lord of Athlethan, transferred it to the Dominicans in 1252 at the request of his wife Basilia, daughter of Meiler de Birmingham." (from Peter Harbison's "Guide to National and Historic Monuments of Ireland".
