North Atlantic Skyline, despatches from the west of Ireland

Just like last year, it poured rain all morning as I drove out to Omey from Galway. Just as I reached Clifden, the sky cleared, albeit briefly). The Omey Beach Horse Races took place this year (July 29th, 2006) in the usual place - the patch of sand revealed at low tide between Omey Island and Claddaghduff, north of Clifden in Co. Galway. This year differed from last year in that there seemed to be far more delays between the races (the first one took forever to get going). There were more false starts too, because the longer the horses were kept hanging around at the starting rope, the more nervous and edgier they got. Alas, there were more fallers too (and remember, the jockeys are just kids, bouncing off the hard sand) but mercifully, none were injured. The wind and rain returned soon after the races began (and there is little shelter on the beach). But yet it is a great spectacle - maybe next year, we'll get a bit of good weather to go with it.
