The great expanse beach at Omey Island, north of Clifden, Co. Galway, is a transient thing, appearing only at low tide. The tide reclaims the sands faster than you can imagine. The custom of racing on the beach is an old one - sixty years ago, my father-in-law raced and won on this beach. Despite the torrential rain early in the day, Saturday's meeting (July 23 2005) was a great spectacle. Maybe next year, we might get a bit of sunshine too.
