North Atlantic Skyline, despatches from the west of Ireland

New Quay, Co. Clare

New Quay is a picturesque little village on the Galway Bay coastline, halfway between Kinvarra and Ballyvaghan, and just up the road from Finvarra. The village is sheltered behind Aughinish, an island linked by a causeway to Doorus, an isthmus west of Kinvarra. I arrived in the village around five in the evening after climbing Abbey Hill and hadn't eaten since breakfast. The smell of cooking seafood, butter and garlic wafting from the packed dining room of Linnane's was irresistible.

Nearby is Mount Vernon Lodge, which was the home of Sir Hugh Lane (after whom the gallery in Dublin is named). He died in the Lusitania and the home was later the summer home of Lady Gregory - visitors included Yeats , St. John Gogarty, Shaw and Synge. it was in New Quay that Lady Gregory and W B Yeats came up with the idea of the Rish National Theatre, now known as the Abbey Theatre.
