Country Life Fair in Emo Court, County Laois - June 5th, 2006
There were plenty of Dubs wandering about the place on the Bank Holiday Monday when I visited - they must have been disappointed not to see people strolling about chewing hayseeds (no need with all the burger vans), no-one walking around with the arse hanging out of his trousers (ok - actually most of the women were strolling about with both their bottoms and bellies hanging out, but I think the kids are calling that fashion these days) and no sheep! No matter - there were plenty of things to see. I didn't get around to seeing the vintage cars, the show-jumping or the hot-air balloon dispaly. But I did get to see a few other things on an absolutely scorching June day.
Emo Court was designed by James Gandon (who also designed the Customs House in Dublin) and was built in 1791. There are 55 acres of gardens - the State took ownership in 1994.
