The castle at Fishpond Cross at the foothills of the Sliabh Aughty mountains, near Kilchreest, is much like a lot of stone towers to be found around the country. I think it was one a number of castles built by the Burke family, and I don't know much about its original history.
The castle does have one piece of relatively recent history; it was used as the setting for the 1968 film, Alfred the Great, which starred those two stalwarts of Sixties cinema in the UK, David Hemmings and Michael York.
