Famine Ridge

The potato ridges were also called 'lazy beds' though there was nothing easy about digging them. They were formed by digging a sod and turning it over. By digging on either side, and laying the sods into the middle, a wide raised 'bed' of soil was formed, in which the potatoes were planted. Usually, cow dung (or shite, as it is officially known) or seaweed was added to the drill for fertiliser.
