Looking downstream from inside the lock gate. The path of the canal leads towards the road and the wall of Ashford Castle. Note the curved wall on the canal to concentrate the weight of the water towards the centre of the lock floor and away from the lock gate wall. The slot in the lock gate wall is to accomodate the lock gates - the wooden lock gates would have been flush with the lock wall when opened fully.
