Athenry

Athenry Castle.This Anglo-Norman castle was built by Mieler de Birmingham family in 1235.

The winged Horse statue (in front of the castle) is dedicated to the Athenry-born poet, Padraic Fallon, who was a contemporary of William Butler Yeats. The statue was unveiled by Seamus Heaney in June 1992. You can read examples of Fallon's poetry here.
