North Atlantic Skyline, despatches from the west of Ireland

Miners have worked in Arigna for centuries. Unfortunately, the coal deposits in Arigna were of poor quality. The ESB had built an electricity generating station nearby in 1958 specifically to burn the coal from Arigna. Once the higher grade coal had been used up, the promise of a station adapted to burn the poorer quality coal never materialised. The existing station was closed, along with the mine.
