North Atlantic Skyline, despatches from the west coast of Ireland

Abbey Hill, The Burren, Co. Clare

On ahill that is mostly bare limestone, the presence of walls may seem a little strange. Why divide up a field on which nothing can grow or live? As it turns out, there is a bit of grass growing on the hill, but not much. There are plenty of other plants, though. As for the walls, you'll find boundaries in even the poorest land in Ireland. In fact, the presence of livestock plays an important part of the Burren ecosystem - both cattle and wild goats help keep the hazel woods from overwhelming the meadows - they also ensure that, within the meadows, the grass does not overwhelm the other flowers and plant.
