County Mayo

County Mayo is roughly 2000 sq. miles of bog and limestone, with the odd field and town thrown in for good measure. There's plenty of sheep there too. There is a rugged beauty to the county, from the Ceide Fields overlooking Downpatrick Head, the bare splendour of Nephin and Croagh Patrick to the flat, peaty plains of Bangor Erris.  Two lakes bookend the county - Lough Conn to the north, near Ballina, and Lough Mask/Lough Carra to the south. The biggest and best-known fjord is in the county (Killary Harbour) as is the biggest island - Achill. And we can't forget Knock either, a small village in the bog that can boast an international airport, a Marian shrine and someof the tackiest religious shops in Europe.
