The Price of Paradise

Even on Inishbofin island, off the Galway coast, the property boom is beginning to flag. I photographed this old cottage on the August Bank Holiday weekend, and it is still on the market. According to the auctioneer

[the cottage above] is a once off opportunity to have your own little piece of paradise

Who could put a price on paradise ? Well, as it happens, the auctioneer has - he's looking for 200,000 euro. As is.

200,000 smackers for a hovel ? I'd expect him to throw in a widow with a dowry for that.

I remember a place for sale on the border of Cork/Kerry we looked at a decade or more ago; we couldn't have afforded it even then at IR50K, but at least it was habitable. LOL

We had to vacate our rental house after 13 years when the landlord jumped into the land boom last year...we would have tried to buy if he'd taken $60K...which is more than the old place was worth, but he priced it at $160K...so it sat vacant for a year before it went for a bit less.

I loathe money hungry speculators no matter where they live.
