Celtic Explorer

The Celtic Explorer seen from The Claddagh as it prepares to dock in Galway Harbour this afternoon.

Want to know how many Blue Mackerel swims in our seas ? Or figure out exactly what the Irish seabed looks like ? The Celtic Explorer is Ireland's main marine research vessel and answering those questions is what occupies the the crew right now. The ship can be hired by private companies to do commercial research, at a cost of 20,000 euro a day, that might seem like a lot, but if you are an oil company exploring in Irish waters, the government already lets you write off every penny against tax (so I guess you and me are paying for it).

If you want to know where the ship is right now, the online tracking system can be found here (right now, it's tied up outside my apartment) and if you fancy working on the vessel, you can sign up here.

Hi again,
I was able to see the CV edging through the lock the other day, and have a quick question.

The Harbour Cam is repositioned now (praise be, my neck was getting skewed), and I'm curious about the brownish (brick?) structure one sees on the "bitumen" side of the dock. With your birdseye vantage, can you tell me what that building is?
Keep up the good work.
Angh

ps...my fave pub was always Garavan's...do you ever stop in there?

That building is my apartment block - I live on the other end of it. You can see a better view of the building in this picture (http://www.flickr.com/photos/monasette/138519893/)

Haven't been to Garavan's in a long while...so many pubs in Galway, so little time

Hello John,
(it is John isn't it?)
I just found your site on a link form Gingerpixel.
Enjoying your photography and writing very much, especially the photos. You're lucky to live in such a beautiful area, we've been to the west quite a lot for holidays and I've always enjoyed my visits.
I'm a keen photographer myself, went to Art College and now I'm a freelance graphic/web designer. I can appreciate your use of light in your photos, as I know it can make or break the image, particularly for the landscape shots. Checkout my images on my blog when you get a chance - there aren't many there but I do have a flash gallery of my photos taken on various holidays to Southern France. The light was great there, as was the food, wine etc...
I really must get my Flickr stuff organised!
I'd be interested in any more info about how you take your shots, eg. are you crouching in undergrowth for hours to get those marvellous bird photos?
What do you use for editing? I am a big fan of Adobe Lightroom, using it on a Mac and it's a great job for the increasing quantities of images I'm shooting on my DSLR.
