Elphin Statue

I was watching Battleship Potemkin on telly over the weekend and this statue came to mind. There's something reminiscent of the old Soviet statues commemorating fallen comrades about the statue. Up close, it's a huge lump of concrete without much detail. There'a book out this Xmas, called They put the Flag a-Flyin' about the Roscommon IRA - a painting of the statue decorates the cover.
Plus a few people requested a picture of it, so why not?

Posted by Monasette at December 21, 2005 11:43 PMthanks for acting on the request - you're made my christmas. the Barrack church out here in Renmore has some fantastic old military plaques and stained glass windows - ranging from Connacht Ranger days to UN service in Lebanon - come out when its bright, to catch the sun through the glass.
always amazes me why we put up statues to murderers - like the ira bloke on the top of eyres sq - what do the visitors think!
i'd say you're sleeping well these nights beside the docks oil tanks after the bundsford explosion in england ...

Posted by: Becca at December 28, 2005 04:11 PMThanks for posting the picture. Maybe one day someone can transcribe and post a list of the names that are on it! Anyone who has ancestors in the area would be interested to see who they are!
