Rossport Five

Grafitti on wall of Shell depot in Galway.

After ninety four days in jail, the Rossport Five were finally released from prison during the week. The final outcome of their protest against the Shell pipeline remains unresolved. As for the much anticipated debate on why new exploration licences are being offered with the same giveaway conditions as the Shell one, the silence has been deafening.

I painted the tops of those oil tanks bank in the summer of 91. I need some extra cash while doing my postgrad. Fun job, can't remember if they were owner by Shell back then. Shell suck, I still won't buy petrol from them, ever since the execution of Ken Siro-Wiwa.

Yeah, I'm never sure what to think of Galway when I got home. It really was "mine" when I left. I loved the place, but all the development around the city is so unplanned and often ugly. I hate being a "back in my day" whiner, but.........
