Beech

Flies on new beech leaves in Menlough graveyard, on the side of Lough Corrib, Galway City.

Tá an Samhradh linn agus tá sé ag caitheamh sceana gréasaí. Arís.

Nothing symbolizes the early summer more than the canopy of satin green leaves adorning the long, muscular boughs of beech trees. I'm not sure about the insects canoodling on the back of this leaf in Menlough graveyard along the river Corrib - either mosquitos or craneflies.

John. I went out to Menlo Castle but only got as far as the gate. I'd no intention of trespassing so that was that. Do you know how I could get access to it? Is this with the G5 or the 350? I found a buyer for my 300 and ordered a 350 from 7day (which I'm cancelling-they're messing my order around again- cheaper from pixmania anyway.)

Hi Sean,
Did you stop at the archway on the road or continue up to the gate of the field where the castle stands (ther is an old sign by the gate that I presume once read "Keep Out". You can continue beyond the archway without trespassing.

If you continue down the path, there is a small woodland on the same side (beside the field where the castle stands).

There is no "keep out" signs in the woodland, though you can get good shots from the road.

The shot above was shot with the G3 (in RAW, 4MB- I haven't done a direct comparison but I suspect that its macro capability is equal if not better to the 350D (RAW, 8MB).

Pixmania seem to be very competitive for the 350D - I bought mine from Jessops but I think Pixmania might be slightly better value.

Doh! I should've climbed the gate! I know it is in some of the council's plans to make it more publicly accessible, along with the plan to run a road over the river there too (Typical council-declare an amenity and then devalue it immediately). Pixmania won't accept my card for some reason. I'll try a different account instead.

Fabulous colour, clarity and bokeh all in the one shot. There would have to be a tripod somewhere in this equation. I got me a G5 a few weeks back. Second hand and just a hundred quid from a mate. Bargain eh? Oh and note the switch from blogspot. Been up about a week. Cheers.

You got a great bargain on the G5.

Re. the pic. above, there wasn't a tripod involved. The great thing about the G3 is that it is so compact and light that you can handhold to a ridiculously low speed. I had to be a bit patient for this one - I shot at ISO50 and there was a breeze shaking the leaf.

Hi Michelle,
So far so good..haven't really tested it out yet (almost all the shots on the site are with the old camera).

The D70 is a fine machine..one of the main reasons I bought the 350D was because I already had Canon-compatible lenses(Sigma) only to find that none of the poxy things worked with the new camera. (Doh!)
