Ringfort of the strong

A ringfort with a secret tunnel ? A children's grave that was never spoken of ? The "Sad Tree"? All these in the one spot, on a sunny May morning, at Lios na dTréan Dubh in Co. Mayo.

Wow - those photos look incredible. Did you walk through the tunnel or is it blocked up?

Great work. I've passed this site many times (as recent as yesterday actually) and have always been impressed with the number of well-preserved ring-forts and earthworks near this stretch of road - up to and beyond Shrule as well. Perhaps it's the nature of the land (and the farming)in this area that has left these relativly intact (compared with say, the fetrile East Galway plain around Athenry, where I suspect any similar forts have been ploughed into the ground years ago).

Funnily enough, there are quite a few old earthworks in east Galway, south of Athenry, around Loughrea, Oranmore and down towards Gort. The ones that haven't been buried under housing estates, of course.

I stand corrected - was actually thinking of the land between Tuam and Athenry but I must check the OS map again.
